While you can always buy a prop Sorting Hat for your Harry Potter party, there are also tons of creative ways that you can do the sorting, especially useful when you're just a lowly Muggle who doesn't have access to a magical talking hat. We're obsessed with these Golden Snitch cereal treats!

We've combined one of the most beloved icons of the Wizarding World, the Quidditch Golden Snitch, and combined it with secretly colored insides to make these rice cereal treats that are cute to look at AND double as a sorting activity for your party guests.

Hogwarts House colors:

  • Red: Gryffindor
  • Yellow: Huffelpuff
  • Blue: Ravenclaw
  • Green: Slytherin

The fondant on these instead of dealing with dipped Candymelts makes it much simpler project for kids to help with, and is WAY less messy. It's a great way to help you end up with similarly sized pieces too, since it's so easy to make inconsistent sizes when you're creating the individual balls. This way, you have the fondant circles there to help keep you on track.

Line a baking pan with wax paper and set aside.

In a medium sized saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add marshmallows.

Stir marshmallows until completely melted, taking care that it doesn’t burn.

Once completely melted, remove from heat and divide into 4 separate bowls.

Add one color to each bowl of marshmallows – about 2-3 small drops. Mix until completely tinted.

Fold in one cup of rice cereal treats into each bowl and fold until all ingredients are well combined.

Roll 1-inch spheres from each colored rice cereal treat mixture. Place each sphere gently on lined baking pan.

Allow the rice cereal treats to set for about 15 minutes.

Roll out the yellow fondant with a rolling pin, until it’s about ¼ of an inch thick.

Using the cookie cutter, cut out 12 yellow fondant circles.

Place one cereal treat in the center of a yellow fondant circle. Stretch until the cereal treat is completely covered with fondant.

Repeat for every rice cereal treat.

Place a small dot of yellow decorating frosting on the back of each set of paper wings. Place on top of each covered rice cereal treats.

Serve and enjoy!

If you open up a green rice cereal treat, then you’ve been placed in Slytherin! Burgundy – you’re a Gryffindor! Yellow, head over to the Hufflepuff common room. Finally, blue – congratulations, you’ve been placed in Ravenclaw!
