We love our Harry Potter projects around here, so I'm always on the lookout for ideas to bring more of the wizarding world into our Muggle one. This magical floating Dementor is one such project! I saw a video on Reddit recently that showed a little figurine hovering in a jar, thanks to clear hydro beads!

The most time consuming part of this project was looking for the perfect container in which to keep our captured Dementor; I picked this jar up at Michaels, but there are lots of options lots of places online, or at a store near you.

Once you have the perfect container, the actual hands on part of this is almost nothing, so here we go!

Floating Dementor Supplies

Put about a tablespoon of dry hydrobeads in your container; my jar holds about 4 oz, for reference. You need far fewer beads than you think, trust me!

Place the container into a larger container with sides, in case of (I promise it will happen) overflow.
Fill your container with water. Within minutes, the hydrobeads will start to swell and enlarge.

If you can, wait overnight for them to expand as far as they're going to go. The project will work if you give them about 2 hours, but you might find that they're still expanding and it can make the top pop off and make a mess. So I recommend waiting if you can.

Once they're fully expanded, you're ready to place your Dementor! Slide it carefully into the middle of the hydrobeads, being careful to have it centered and upright so you can see it well. (When I bought this, it was a keychain, but the keychain part easily popped out, so I removed it first thing when I opened the package.)

Be thankful that you put the jar into a larger container, because those little suckers are slippery and bouncy and go all over the place!

Add more water to fill in any air bubbles that may have been left behind, then seal it up tight!

Enjoy your Dementor attack chocolate and think happy thoughts, no Patronus needed!
