DSC_5432In case you live under a rock, or haven't ever been to my blog before, there's something I need to tell you.
Ready?
I'm tall.
Six feet tall. That means long legs (36 inch inseam), long arms, a long torso, wide shoulders… you name it, and I'm probably out of proportion from the “average” woman.
But I AM an average woman.
I love dresses, and I love wearing them and dressing up and looking cute.
I have long loved the retro 1940's vibe of a structured little shirtdress.
I actually watch and drool over June Cleaver and Lucille Ball's wardrobes.
There are sites that sell those styles, for sure.
But they never fit my not-averagely-proportioned self.
The waist ends up around my ribcage, and the boob darts are somewhere around my collarbone.
I'm all outta whack.

I thought I was condemned to a lifetime of separates and empire waists, until I discovered eShakti.

eShakti offers reasonably priced, custom fit clothing that all has that darling retro feel… cute prints, darling embroidered details, AND they custom make everything to your measurements!

Check out the dress below; you can add sleeves, change the length, or change the neckline. (Different styles have different options)

Also? Everything comes with pockets. POCKETS! Skirts with pockets are always a win!

When eShakti asked if I'd be interested in reviewing one of their dresses, I leapt at the chance and chose this fabulous chambray one:

It's like a blank canvas as far as dresses go, and I love it with red accessories for pop! And someone really needs to invite me to a western-themed party, because this dress is just begging for some cowboy boots and a sterling silver belt!

But wait! There's more! Before I was even given this dress to review, I was already an eShakti addict. I wore this bird print dress for Easter, and the cute striped top up at the beginning of this post? That's eShakti too! I love knowing that things will fit me; no midriff baring tops, indecently short skirts or misplaced waist bands for me!

Oh, and (it's a sickness, I tell you!) I also ordered these two cuties. I love this shawl collar day dress, and can't WAIT to wear the yellow one at Blogher next month! Because it's a MAXI dress, y'all! And it's actually long on me! All of the maxi dresses I've ever worn or wanted to wear came to a weird just-above-ankle length. No more!

All of the pieces are beautifully made; the fabric quality is fantastic and the craftsmanship is gorgeous. For not that much more money than I'd spend at the mall for a dress, I can get a custom made one that's perfect for me! (And if it isn't perfect? Return it! Even custom stuff!)

Disclosure: I received 1 dress for free from eShakti.com in exchange for agreeing to write about it. I purchased the other 3 dresses and the top on my own, with real money. All opinions and content here are my own, I promise. And I currently have 3 or more pieces in my cart on the site. Again.

  1. I’ve always loved the 40’s & 50’s style dresses too which is why I love the eshakti dresses and of course Shabby Apple! Thanks for the promo code… I’m off to get a new dress!

  2. I LOVE eShakti! I plan on shopping there much more in the future. They got great stuff that I can wear to the office and then whisk off to a happy hour with co-workers in.

    1. I am totally and completely in love! I check every morning, since they’re adding so much new stuff all the time!

  3. You look adorbs! 😉

I sadly missed my last chance to order from them and review because I didn’t have a way to get my measurements. I suck!! But you rock those dresses, pretty lady!

    1. Did they give you a deadline to respond? You should reach out again!
(I did my own measurements, the only one I needed help with was my shoulders)

  4. As someone that is long torso’d I hate buying clothes but LOVE LOVE LOVE dresses. I’m sold. Making some purchases and using the discount code! Thanks much!

    1. YES! And they’re all SUPER cute! (OK, not all… there are some *ahem* interesting fabric choices sometimes, but whatever makes you smile, right?)

  5. Ok, so I just ordered 2 dresses! And can I just say how much I love the yellow maxi on you, as well as the green dress! I was all set to order the other day and lagged and now the one you have as an example isn’t available. (the black top with black and white stripes) but I managed to find 2 really cute dresses. The first one I used your code for a gorgeous sale price maxi and got it for $27. The second one I got an adorable sale price dress and used the $30 off site discount and got it for $12!!! OMG!!!

    1. WOOT!
And thanks for saying the yellow looks good! I was a *little* nervous about it, because I don’t really wear yellow, but Max REALLY loved it (his favorite color) and asked me to please get it! LOL

  6. I have been looking at eShakti for years. I, too, am tall and cannot find ready to wear dresses that fit properly. Your photos may have just convinced me to finally place an order. Thanks!

    1. You should!
I was really skeptical about the quality (based on the prices) until I got my first order. It’s SO worth every penny and then some!

  7. Everything you got is super cute on you! My dress should be here any day now. I’m excited! I’ll show you once it’s here.

  8. I have been looking at this shop and I am hesitant. I am not sure if the custom fit will look good/right. Did you find that things fit right on the first try, or did you have to send something back and try again? I am never sure about ordering online and not trying stuff on first….but that seems to be the only way I can find cute stuff.

    1. Honestly, I’ve only returned 1 piece. It had a weird hem that did my butt ZERO favors. The return was simple.
I just don’t buy the stuff that I *know* doesn’t look great on me, like overly gathered waistlines. I stick with the fitted ones, or sheath or jersey fabrics.
I think I need to write an updated post with more photos, since I’ve gotten a bunch more since I wrote this!
But really, use the general rules for your body (like my issues tend be waistline related, in this instance) and you’ll find you can get away with a lot when it’s custom-made to your size!

  9. Lovely dresses and a lovely model to boot! I had a question for you – would you mind telling me how long the maxi dress actually is? I am considering ordering an eshakti dress for an event, but I want it to be full evening gown length – I am worried if I put in my height (5’7″) and ankle-length, it will be too short, so I am considering pretending I am taller than I am 😉 (does that make sense?). Since you are actually taller than me, lol, I thought I might be able to get a benchmark from you to see what “ankle-length” is if you enter 6′ tall as your height. Thanks!

    1. Thanks for the sweet words!
The maxi dress is actually put away for winter at the moment, so I can’t measure it for you, but it’s pretty true for full-length on me, just by putting my height in. I find, in general, that their measurements are pretty accurate, as far as knee-length and sleeves and such.
You might want to add an inch or so if you’re planning on heels though!

  10. I just found your blog while looking for reviews on eshakti, and I’m so excited to read more. I am also six feet tall, and completely understand about high waists, 34″ inseams being considered “tall”, and blah-length maxi dresses. You look awesome.

  11. I love all of the dresses I’ve ordered from them too. I think you look stunning in your dresses! I wish my entire wardrobe could be eshakti dresses.

  12. I found your blog while looking for eShakti reviews, and I was super excited because I have the opposite problem–I’m only five feet tall! I just ordered my first dress from them and I can’t wait to get it. I’m also pumped for the possibility of wearing maxi dresses–they’re all about six inches too long on me! Thanks for the review!

  13. I like all the dresses you have on and I am so thankful for finding eshakti. I go the bargain for mothers day, buy 2 get one free.

  14. I am still thinking about that blue dress you wore at Mom 2.0 and had to come over and get your affiliate link. I’m not sure what I want to order (haven’t looked yet) but know I need some new dresses in my life. Thanks! (Btw, I LOVE that green dress too)

    1. That’s totally one of my favorites, and I should probably update this post to show more of my pieces… and yay for ordering! Did you see they have a Buy 2 get 1 free deal right now?!?!

      1. Hello,

I found your blog while I was looking for reviews for Eshakti. I am also 6 feet tall but I am plus size. I definitely feel your pain on finding a maxi that isn’t an awkward length. I just ordered a maxi dress and the Chelsea dress with sleeves. I would love to see an updated post with the other treasures you’ve purchased. Thanks for the review.

  15. So glad to hear great reviews. The dresses look great on you. I just placed an order with them, recommended from someone else, then I decided to check reviews and saw so many negative ones. I feel a bit better hearing your experience and I hope that mine will be much the same.

    1. I’m still ordering! I’m actually expecting another order due to be delivered tomorrow! 🙂
I should probably update this post, or maybe write another one, huh?

  16. Hi there Lizz! I have read this review of yours several times ofver the past couple of years. I am tall too, though not quite as tall as you are: 5’11”. I can identify with the trouble of finding clothing long enough. I was wondering which length you ordered for the green dress as it is exactly the length I am looking for. Was it Knee, or Mid-Calf length? Thanks!! :0
    xox, Crystelle

    1. I can’t be 100% sure, but I’m about 95% sure it’s “below the knee”
They *always* hem to a good length based on height, even if you don’t do custom sizing for anything else.
