How are they so much in focus and the background not? I’m still learning about my camera and taking pictures. Thanks!

It’s a combination of factors; I shot this at about 2.8, so I had a pretty large (“wide open”) aperture, which makes a shallower depth of field so the background gets that lovely blur.
It also helps to get your subject a little further away from the background. I shot this in their garage; I was in the back, the lights were on the garage door up front, and they’re pretty much in the middle between me and the lights. Does that make sense?
