Here's the situation:

I've gained about 40 lbs. since my transplant in Sept. 2010.

I haven't been happy with my body for almost a year now.

I've been trying to come up with some way to make changes for a while.

I'm turning 35 in July, and starting to feel old.

So needless to say, I was easy pickings when this came down my Facebook feed this morning, from my friend Rachel:

A duathlon, huh? Run, bike, run. That actually sounds kind of fun… I found myself thinking… I could do a mile and a 5k at the end of May. And a 14 mile bike ride. I could do this, right? Maybe if I put a little money into it and publically tell people I'm going to do it… I actually will.

Think. Think. Think.

Before I knew what was happening, I was doing this:

And so here we are! I'm signed up to do my first duathlon on May 20, 2012. A one mile run, 14 mile bike ride, then a 5k run.

I'd love to hear your tips and tricks… this is my first real athletic undertaking than my ill-fated soccer career in 2nd grade, so I welcome anything you have to suggest! Training ideas, snack suggestions, playlist recommendations… I'm accepting all input.

And feel free to hold me to my training! Ask me, if you see me around, how it's going. (But not tonight. It's raining and I'm still getting used to the idea of this. I'll start tomorrow, I promise!)

Wish me luck!

  1. Sorry it took me so long to respond.

First off.. Yay! Good for you! I wish there was one around me to participate it.

Secondly, start your training with reasonable expectations. Try running 1km. Do that until you are comfortable enough to feel like you need more. I run 5km now, but there was a time when I ran 1km and I swore to holy-hell that I didn’t want to do it again. But I did.

Thirdly, keep us posted. I’ve never heard of the duathalon but it sounds awesome! I’d love to hear about your progress. All the best! 🙂
