Hawaiian Bread Recipe for Bread Machine

hawaiian read recipe for bread machine

I am obsessed with my bread machine.  So when I found this Hawaiian sweet bread machine recipe,  I had to try replicating King's Hawaiian bread at home.

Hawaiian Sweet Bread

This is one of my favorite kinds of bread, especially as toast with homemade jam on top! It's also delicious as french toast.

I use the bread machine to mix the dough before transferring to a pan and then baking in the oven.  This produces a more traditional loaf shape than I get out of my machine.

It also works well to just pile the dough onto parchment paper and bake it as a freeform loaf.

It's delicious no matter what shape it is!

Hawaiian Sweet Bread

Rating  3.0 from 2 reviews

Prep time:  2 hours

Cook time:  30 mins

Total time:  2 hours 30 mins

Ingredients
  • 2½ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 3 eggs, slightly beaten
  • 1 cup pineapple juice
  • ⅔ cup white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • ½ cup butter, melted
  • 6 cups bread flour
Instructions
  1. Place all liquid ingredients and sugar into bread maker pan
  2. Stir to combine
  3. Add flour on top of liquid, place pan in bread maker
  4. Follow machine directions to add yeast
  5. I only use the machine to make the dough; I finish it in the oven.
  6. This recipe makes 2 loves, so it won't fit in the maker for baking.
  7. Split dough and put into 2 greased pans.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes at 350, until lightly browned and it sounds hollow when thumped
  9. Let rest in pan for 10 minutes before turning out onto cooling rack.
  10. Enjoy!

How did you get it to rise? Mine wouldn’t rise at all and I added all the ingredients like directed. Did you do something special for the yeast?

      Hi Heather,
I didn’t do anything special, just put it in the yeast cup thing on my machine. Is it possible your yeast is older?

Other than making more than your bread maker holds, is there a reason you do not finish the bread in the bread maker? Thank you for sharing what look like a crowd pleaser!!!!

No reason, I just wanted the traditional loaf pan shape instead of bread maker shape. 🙂

IMO baking the bread in the bread machine yields a loaf with a very tough crust. Quite unappealing. I have had a bread machine since they first came out and have only used the dough setting. After it’s finished I shape it and put it in a regular loaf pan, let it rise for about 20 minutes then bake at 350.
Thank you, Lizz, for this delicious recipe!

If I’m not using a bread machine, but I am using a kitchen aide to mix, what are the steps?

Do u think this could be successfully baked in a 9×13 pan? I want to use it to make those little baked ham and cheese sandwiches that you use Hawaiian rolls for I despise shaping all those rolls. Lol

Do you let it rise in the machine or do you remove it

Hi Mackenzie, I’m sure it would work without a bread machine, but I’m not sure what the specific steps would be.

I have a question. What if I don’t have a bread maker can I do this by hand or a mixer?

I’m sure you could, but I’m not sure of the specific directions. I’ve only ever made it in my bread machine! 🙂

Oops, sorry! You can add it when you mix in the liquids before the flour. Sorry about that!

Didn’t rise like I expected and my yeast was new. I noticed after I got the machine started that this recipe had no salt so I wonder if that’s the issue.

I’m planning to try this! Thank you for sharing! White Lilly bread flour has the same recipe on the back of their bag only your recipe substitutes part of the milk for pineapple juice and theirs is a pull apart bread recipe .

I’m pretty sure this bread needs a second rise before its baked, don’t think that is stated in your recipe!

I made this recipe this morning and put it into pans. However it did not rise one bit! But I’m not going to give up. I am going to try warming up the pineapple juice with the yeast and set that aside for a little bit because I think the yeast needs warmth to expand .

Fantastic bread!! I made it in a stand mixer. Added all ingredients except butter, added that last. Poofed the yeast first. Kneed until it pulled apart from the sides of the bowl. Let it rise for about an hour, punched it down, divided it in half into 2 loaf pans, let it rise again and then baked it as directed. Turned out great.

I have made this twice and I find that 6 cups of flour is far too much. It is very dense why 6 cups. It looks like 3 would do. And I let it rise before baking.

Did you try using just 3 cups? If so, did it work?

Mine didn’t rise either – it tasted good, but heavy.

Love this recipe, always produces a large beautiful loaf, tastes just like name brand “Hawaiian Sweet Bread”, even the taste of the crust. But…. no matter what i do, i end up with a loaf that bakes higher on one side???? Almost as though i used the “old” method to form a bread loaf by rolling it out and rolling it up….. and had the last “roll” come undone.
Do you have this problem? Recipes cuts in half nicely, to bake one 1 1/2 pound loaf.

That’s so weird! I’ve never seen that… I wonder if it’s uneven heat in your oven?

Thanks for posting this! I was searching for interesting recipes for my bread maker.

Just took this out of the oven. I followed the recipe to the T. I had no problem getting the dough to rise and it tastes amazing! I made one loaf and divided the other into balls for dinner size rolls. Like some of the other comments the flavor is good but it is a little dense. Is there a trick to getting it a little more fluffy?

I too love using my bread machine to make the dough so I can shape and bake the loaf in the pan of my choice.
I want to try this recipe but my bread machine clearly states that the most flour it can handle in Any bread recipe is four cups. I’m afraid putting six cups of flour in my bread machine would result in a huge mess so are you certain if should six cups of flour?
    Thanks
